A Rich History: From Amusement Park to Veterans Camp

Big Island wasn’t always a secluded escape—it once played a major role in Lake Minnetonka’s history. Originally known as Moore Island and later Meeker Island, this land has seen many transformations over the years.  

One of the most famous chapters in its history was the Big Island Amusement Park, which operated in the early 1900s. The park, which opened in 1906, was developed by the Twin City Rapid Transit Company and featured grand attractions such as a roller coaster, a music casino, picnic areas, and an electric light tower that guided boats to the island. At the time, visitors could reach the island via steamboats from Excelsior and other lake communities. However, the amusement park was short-lived, closing in 1911, with remnants of its foundations still visible in some areas today.  

Following the amusement park era, Big Island found a new purpose as the Big Island Veterans Camp, where it served as a retreat for soldiers returning from World War I. For many years, this camp provided rest and rehabilitation for veterans, offering a peaceful environment away from city life. Eventually, the City of Orono purchased the land, ensuring that much of the island remains protected as parkland for future generations to enjoy.

Today, Big Island is known for its mix of private residences and public parkland. A large portion of the island is owned by the City of Orono, which has preserved it as a natural park with walking trails, picnic areas, and public docks.
