Hardscrabble Point

Hardscrabble Point reaches into the Upper Lake from Minnetrista, south of Mound. Cook's Bay lies to the north, Priest Bay opens along its western side, and West Upper Lake spreads out beyond the point to the south and east. That change from sheltered bay to open water is part of what makes the shoreline here interesting. Two homes on the same road can have quite different views and exposure.

Hardscrabble Road North and Hardscrabble Circle serve the neighborhood. Wooded lots, long stretches of private shoreline, older lake homes and substantial estates give it a character of its own. Some properties face into Priest Bay; others look across the broad water of West Upper Lake. At the narrow end of the point, a property can have shoreline on both sides.

The steamboat years

In the steamboat years, this was a familiar landmark on the run toward Cook's Bay. Recollections of summer childhood describe the Belle of Minnetonka and the City of St. Louis striking up their bands as they reached the point, bringing children down to watch. Another early account remembers Hardscrabble Point as a particularly popular swimming beach. By the time that history was published in 1964, the beach was privately owned.

Homes along the point

As life on Hardscrabble Point shifted toward private lake homes, its wooded shoreline drew people with very different ideas about what to build.

Architect Carl Graffunder and his wife, Mariedawn Legien Graffunder, found a wooded lakeside site here for a summer home. He designed an A-frame with a tall glass front and exposed fir beams, completed in 1965. An addition in 1975 made room for year-round living and her musical instruments, including two pianos and a harp. The house brought a distinctly modern approach to lake home architecture, with the woods and water close at hand.

Two decades later, a home on a much larger scale took shape at 5800 Hardscrabble Circle. Music producer James "Jimmy Jam" Harris bought the land in 1987 and built a contemporary residence of more than 22,000 square feet, completed in 1991. Its pools, theater and extensive entertaining spaces made it one of the lake's best-known homes. The history of Jimmy Jam's former Lake Minnetonka estate follows the property through its sales, demolition in 2020 and subsequent subdivision.

Hardscrabble property today

Remodeling, replacement homes and occasional subdivision are all part of the neighborhood's more recent history. The former Jimmy Jam tract became the two-lot Murphy Highlands subdivision, using the existing Hardscrabble Circle rather than a new street.
