Medicine Lake Real Estate & Lifestyle Guide
Lakeside Living in Plymouth and the City of Medicine Lake
Medicine Lake is one of the west metro’s hidden gems—just 15 minutes from downtown Minneapolis, yet it feels a world apart. This fully recreational lake spans 924 acres with nearly nine miles of shoreline and is shared by two cities: Plymouth and the City of Medicine Lake. The result is a rare blend of quiet lakeside charm and urban convenience.
I’ve owned property on Medicine Lake, and it’s where much of my hands-on experience with riparian rights comes from. Every shoreline has its own story, and I’ve spent years helping others navigate both the legal and lifestyle aspects of lakefront ownership here.
Waterfront Lifestyle and Recreation
Medicine Lake is fully recreational, offering a four-season lifestyle with boating, wake surfing, paddleboarding, water skiing, and excellent fishing. In the warmer months, the lake’s sandy bottom and gradual slope make it ideal for swimming right off your dock. Come winter, the lake comes alive with ice fishing, skating, and groomed cross-country ski trails that connect to nearby parks and trail systems.
Over time, I’ve developed a few favorite spots on the lake. The southwest corner features the deepest water—perfect for anchoring on summer afternoons. On the eastern edge of the lake, just before the water flows into Bassett Creek, there’s a naturally occurring pool that feels like a secret hideaway. That outflow forms the headwaters of Bassett Creek, which meanders through Minneapolis and eventually connects with the Mississippi River.
Homes and Architecture on Medicine Lake
The shoreline of Medicine Lake is home to an impressive variety of properties, from new custom builds with modern lines and panoramic glass to vintage mid-century homes lovingly renovated over generations. Many residences feature private docks, large decks, expansive windows, and thoughtful landscaping. Homes along South Shore Drive and Peninsula Road are particularly sought after, thanks to their views, lake access, and sense of privacy.
Medicine Lake real estate includes everything from year-round family homes to summer retreats. Most properties are zoned single-family, helping preserve the quiet, low-density character of the neighborhood.
Access and Location
Medicine Lake’s location is one of its biggest advantages. It sits near major routes including Highway 55, Highway 169, and I-494, offering easy access to downtown Minneapolis, Wayzata, and the broader Twin Cities area. Though it feels secluded, you’re never far from shopping, dining, and everyday conveniences.
The scenic routes along Peninsula Road and South Shore Drive offer some of the most picturesque drives in Plymouth, winding alongside the water and through mature trees.
Nearby Parks, Trails, and Attractions
Outdoor lovers will find plenty to explore around Medicine Lake. French Regional Park lies just to the north and features a swimming beach, playground, picnic areas, and miles of wooded trails. The Luce Line State Trail runs along the southern edge of the lake, perfect for biking, jogging, or cross-country skiing. West Medicine Lake Park offers additional recreational space with tennis courts, open fields, and shaded walking paths.
Bassett Creek flows out from the lake near the eastern dam, continuing through a series of nature corridors and neighborhoods in Minneapolis before joining the Mississippi River. It’s one of the many natural features that add to Medicine Lake’s ecological and recreational richness.
Schools and Community
Depending on your address, homes on Medicine Lake fall into either the Wayzata Public Schools or Robbinsdale Area Schools. Both districts offer strong academic programs and vibrant community support.
Living on Medicine Lake comes with a sense of neighborly connection that’s hard to find. The small-town feel of the City of Medicine Lake blends seamlessly with the larger community of Plymouth, creating a lifestyle that’s welcoming, active, and close to nature.
Your Place on the Lake
Medicine Lake offers more than just lakefront living—it offers a lifestyle defined by peace, recreation, and connection. Whether you’re looking for a permanent residence, a seasonal retreat, or an investment in lakeshore real estate, there’s something truly special here.
I know this lake, not just as a realtor, but as someone who’s lived it. If you're curious about making your move to Medicine Lake, I’d be happy to share everything I’ve learned. Let's find your place on the water.
